Fastnet's Magicool Wins Derby
Less than 24 hours after champion Australian sire Fastnet Rock produced Epsom Oaks heroine Qualify, he added another Classic winner to his tally with Magicool (3g Fastnet Rock Perfect Truth, by Galileo) capturing the Group I BRC Queensland Derby at Doomben.
A stakes-winner in Melbourne last spring and fifth in the Group I VRC Victoria Derby, the Mark Kavanagh trained gelding showed he was on the cusp of something with a good last start win at Flemington following a fourth in the Group I SAJC SA Derby.
Well ridden by James Winks from a wide gate, he produced a strong finish to win the 2200 metre event by three-quarters of a length.
"I got a fair way back but they went really solid early,” Winks said.
"I had three-deep cover most of the way and full credit to the horse when I asked him he was there for me.
"Credit to Mark, he’s got him rock hard fit, we spoke this morning and we were both quietly confident.
"I can’t thank him enough for the opportunity.”
A $250,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Coolmore draft for Mark Kavanagh Racing, Magicool runs for a big syndicate of stable clients and has the overall record of five wins and a second from 14 starts with prizemoney just shy of $670,000.
Bred by Hutchins Thoroughbreds, Magicool is bred on the exact same cross as Epsom Oaks winner Qualify as he is the first winner for stakes-winning Galileo mare Perfect Truth (IRE), who won the Listed Cheshire Oaks at 11 ½ furlongs.
Magicool is the 20th Group I winner for Fastnet Rock, who heads the Australian General Sires List by earnings..
