Magic Millions Magna Grecia First Yearlings
One of the most interesting first season sires at Magic Millions this year is Magna Grecia, a Group I winner at two and three by champion sire Invincible Spirit, whose influence in Australia is undeniable.
Bred by Australian breeder Bob Scarborough, Magna Grecia was purchased as a foal for 340,000 guineas at the Tattersalls December Sales. He was an immediate star for Aidan O’Brien winning easily on debut over 7f as a juvenile and then two starts later won the Group I Doncaster Futurity Trophy (1m).
At three, Magna Grecia scored a dominant two and a half length win in the Newmarket Two Thousand Guineas stamping himself amongst the best of his generation.
As good as his race performances were, the pedigree of Magna Grecia is even more interesting as his Group III winning dam Cabaret (Galileo) produced another star colt two years after he was born in St Mark’s Basilica.
The European Horse of the Year in 2021, St Mark’s Basilica (Siyouni) won six races, five of them at Group I level and he too has been in Australia covering his first Southern Hemisphere book of mares last spring.
Yearling buyers will have their first taste of this emerging sire family through Magna Grecia at Magic Millions where he has 12 entries, click to see them, with pedigree highlights including: a half-sister to multiple Group winning filly Seradess from stakes-placed Obsidian Dragon; half-sister to stakes-placed Hell I Am, winner of Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Classic; a colt from stakes-placed Jaquetta; colt from good producer Sucker Punch, a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Merlene; and first foal (colt) of Gladys, unraced sister to G2 placed SW Choice Words.
