New Stakes-Winner for Fastnet Rock
Placed in both the Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond Stakes last season, quality filly Lake Geneva (3f Fastnet Rock x Hips Don't Lie, by Stravinsky) scored a valuable Black Type win in the Listed MVRC Crockett Stakes at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day.
The Hawkes Racing trained Lake Geneva bounced back from a couple of recent below par efforts to post a narrow half head win in the 1200 metre sprint.
"On her work and how she looked, we thought she’d run good but she hadn’t actually put it together in her first couple of runs back and we had been disappointed with her,” said co-trainer Wayne Hawkes.
Despite enduring a tough run in transit from a wide gate, Lake Geneva got the job done for James Winks in a tenacious display.
"Unfortunately he just got posted but he didn’t panic and he just held on to her. It was a pretty gutsy win,” Hawkes said.
"She didn’t have the winner’s run. That’s why she got tired towards the end.”
A $1million Inglis Easter purchase from the Coolmore draft, Lake Geneva runs for Coolmore and partners and has won two races and placed five times from nine starts earning nearly $600,000 in prizemoney.
Lake Geneva was foaled and raised at Coolmore as have been so many recent stakes-winners including the Cox Plate winner Winx and is the first winner for Group II winning Stravinsky (USA) mare Hips Don’t Lie.
Hips Don’t Lie is all but married to Fastnet Rock and has a two year-old filly by the sire called Irish Sea, a yearling filly by him and another filly foal born this spring.
Lake Geneva is the 88th stakes-winner for champion sire Fastnet Rock.
