Pierro Mare Has More to Offer
As a full sister to dual Group I winner Shadow Hero, well bred mare Chenin (4m Pierro x Sookie, by Casino Prince) is assured of a future at stud, but she has more racing to do and a dominant win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday is sure to pave the way for further success.
Trained by Mark Newnham, Chenin was fitted with blinkers in a bid to find an edge after two recent second placings and they did the trick.
She found the front for Josh Parr and kept up a good gallop to win the Benchmark 72 event over 1600m by more than two lengths taking her overall record to two wins and four placings from just nine starts with prizemoney topping $80,000.
“We were gifted the lead and she travelled well,” said Parr.
“I like her at this distance with the blinkers on, I think she’s a better racehorse. She can run further, she has the stamina for that, but I think blinkers on and a mile is her best.”
A $360,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the Newgate Farm draft for Laurel Oak Bloodstock (FBAA) / Grant Bloodstock, Chenin was bred by Greg and Donna Kolivos of Lighting Thoroughbreds, who raced Pierro, and was foaled and raised at Newgate.
Chenin is a full sister to Group I ATC Spring Champion Stakes and Randwick Guineas winner Shadow Hero and is the third winner from Group III winning Casino Prince mare Sookie, a grand-daughter of Champion 2YO Filly Victory Vein.
Sookie has a yearling colt also by Pierro, who has 20 entries for Magic Millions.
