Smart Win for Sea Siren

Beautifully bred filly Sea Siren (3f Fastnet Rock x Express a Smile, by Success Express) made it two wins from three starts when she overcame a stumble after the start to win at Canterbury on Wednesday. The John O’Shea trained filly was sent out favourite on the strength of her last start win at Canterbury on December 16, but gave punters a fright when she nearly lost her footing soon after the jump. She recovered to power home and win the 1250 metre restricted event by a length with a relieved Glyn Schofield glad to still be aboard her. It was a soft win on the line for Sea Siren, who beat home Mickelberg and Rosemerta. "I nearly went straight over the front of her (at the start) but she recovered quickly,” Schofield said. "Once she gathered herself in, she lengthened well and was never going to be beaten. "She’s still racing a bit keen, she might have got a bit of a fright after what happened at the start.” The jockey said a step up in grade would prove no obstacle for the three-year-old. "I think she would cope with the step up to Saturday grade quite comfortably,” he said. O’Shea said the filly was "looking for further” now and would have a short break before being prepared for her autumn campaign. "She was strong on the line. She’ll have a break and come back for a race like the Light Fingers,” O’Shea said. "If she performs there we might look at Queensland.” A homebred for Keith Biggs, Sea Siren is a half-sister to Group II winner Lady Dehere, Group III winner Oratorio and stakes-winner Discorsi being one of seven winners from outstanding producer Express a Smile. Sea Siren looks another potential stakes horse for Fastnet Rock who is riding high this season with eight Australian stakes-winners to his credit.
