$900,000 Pierro Colt Tops Karaka Book 1 Opener
The first session of the 2020 NZB National Yearling Sale Series at Karaka on Sunday produced a big result for Pierro with a stunning colt from Our Squeezer selling for $900,000 to top the opening day of trade.
Consigned by Westbury Stud, the colt from Redoute’s Choice mare Our Squeezer was bought by Hiwi Lodge with Waikato bloodstock agent Gary Carvell signing the docket.
Carvell said the colt’s pedigree was particularly enticing, with Our Squeezer being a half-sister to Imposingly, the dam of three-time Group I winner and New Zealand Horse of the Year Bonneval as well as Group winners Lord Arthur, Imposing Lass, Full Of Spirit, and Lady Cumquat.
“He’s by a sire who’s booming and the cross with Redoute’s Choice mares produces plenty of winners and stakes winners,” Carvell said.
“He’s a lovely horse and they aren’t easy to find. When you go through the sales in Australia there were only two or three colts out of Redoute’s Choice mares.
“I thought he would go to NZ$800,000 or more.”
Carvell said his new owners would take a patient approach with their new acquisition.
“We’ll take our time with him and get him broken in and go from there.
“He’ll be telling us how good he is and where he goes.”
The Pierro x Redoute's Choice cross runs at 21.6% stakes-winners to runners with eight stakes-winners bred this way headed by Group I winners Levendi, Arcadia Queen and Regal Power, while leading New Zealand Derby contender Dragon Leap is also bred this way.
