Classy Wootton Bassett Colt Makes All To Maiden Victory

The highly-rated Native Warrior (3c Wootton Bassett – Beauty Salon, by Dutch Art) gained a deserved win in Wednesday’s mile maiden at Nottingham.

Karl Burke’s charge placed on both his juvenile starts and returned last month to finish fourth to subsequent Guineas victor Notable Speech. He was purchased privately by Wathnan Racing following that performance and was sent off favourite to get off the mark under James Doyle. He set a steady pace in front and began to quicken with over two furlongs left to race and was pushed out to deny the well-bred Fayqa by a neck, with the pair finishing five and a half lengths clear of the third.

The winning rider later mentioned the Brittania Stakes at Royal Ascot as a possible target for the smart colt. Bred by Steve Parkin’s Branton Court Stud, the Wootton Bassett colt is a grandson of Group 3 winner Albisola (Montjeu).
