Velocidad (Gleneagles) Lands The Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes At The Curragh

Group 2 Success Adds To Fantastic Season For Gleneagles

The Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes became the target for Velocidad (2f Gleneagles - Astrantia, by Dansili) after Joseph O’Brien’s charge extended her unbeaten record in the Group 2 Airlie Stud Stakes at the Curragh.

Sent off second favourite off the back of last month’s debut victory, she tracked the leader under Declan McDonagh and joined the lead from two furlongs out. Pushed to lead approaching the final furlong, she was ridden out to win by two and a quarter lengths in comfortable fashion.

“She won nicely, Declan gave her a lovely ride and she's a good filly,” O’Brien said after the race. “Today she looked quick and she's a Group 2 winner now so whatever happens from here on in is a bonus. I suppose the Cheveley Park would be the longer term target.”

Owned by Mrs Anne Marie O’Brien, the daughter of Gleneagles was bred by Bugley Stud and DB Clark out of an own-sister to Strategic Prince. She continues an outstanding season for her sire, becoming his ninth individual Group winner, with five of those having come this season. The top-class son of Galileo is responsible for another five individual Listed winners.
