Lucky Polly (Lookin At Lucky) Breaks Gp Maiden

Lookin At Lucky Scores 3-Year-Old Double

Lookin At Lucky registered two smart 3-year-old winners on Sunday when Wells Bayou (3c Lookin At Lucky x Whispering Angel, by Hard Spun) followed up on the impressive score at Gulfstream Park by Lucky Polly (3f Lookin At Lucky x Polly Alexander, by Foxhound) earlier in the day.

Making her second start of the year, Lucky Polly broke well in the 1 1/16 mile turf race and immediately placed herself in midpack. The filly and jockey Edgard Zayas were content to hold their position until the turn when Lucky Polly switched into gear and passed most of the field.

The pacesetter gave the filly something to run at in the stretch and Lucky Polly thrived on it, grabbing the lead in the final furlong before pulling away to win by two lengths. Owned by Gary Barber, she was bred by Nicholas Sibillio. Out of Listed winner Polly Alexander, Lucky Polly is a half-sister to Listed winners Gabo’s Macondo and Undulated.

A few hours after Lucky Polly’s score, it was Wells Bayou’s turn at Oaklawn Park.

Running over a mile on a muddy dirt track, Wells Bayou broke strongly from his position on the rail and put himself in a battle for the lead by the time the field hit the first turn. Half way down the backstretch, he’d taken over the lead on his own and only built the margin from there.

By the time the field entered the stretch, it would clear the other horses would have to run the race of their lives to catch Wells Bayou and no one was ready for that challenge. The colt led home a Brad Cox-trained 1-2 with his four length victory. Owned by Lance and Clint Gasaway, it was the second win for the colt in three starts after a Keeneland maiden victory in October.

Wells Bayou was bred by Knowles Bloodstock and is the first foal out of the winning mare Whispering Angel, who comes from the family of Champions Big Brown and Hidden Lake.

The sire of 2018 Champion Older Dirt Male Accelerate and 2019 Kentucky Derby winner Country House, Lookin At Lucky’s current crop of 3-year-olds includes stakes winner As Seen On TV and Grade III placed Lookinatamiracle.
