On-Fire Uncle Mo Registers Third Stakes Winner of Week
Second in multiple graded stakes this year, Augustin Stables homebred Mouffy (5m Uncle Mo x Truly Together, by Smart Strike) added a second stakes victory to her record on Thursday with a win in the Listed Perfect Sting Stakes.
Eager to get out of the gate in the one-mile turf race, Mouffy bumped another rival before settling. Jockey Frankie Dettori slotted her into a spot in the back of the pack over five lengths off the leader for the first half mile before encouraging her to go closer. Racing just off the rail, the even-money favorite was asked for more with just over a quarter mile left to run.
In the stretch, she had to battle with No Nay Never’s Midnight Mile, but was able to take command with a sixteenth left to go and held that one off at the line.
It was the fifth victory in 12 starts for the mare trained by Jonathan Thomas, who has seen his charge finish in the top two in nine of 12 career starts with two stakes victories and three other stakes placings.
Mouffy is one of three winners from three foals out of the Grade III-placed Truly Together, a full sister to the stakes placed Smart Together. That duo is out of four-time Grade I winner and champion Forever Together, who produced five winners from seven runners.
Truly Together has a winning Uncle Mo 3-year-old named Uncle Truly as well.
Uncle Mo has sired three stakes winners in five days to end June and start July, led by Grade I Stephen Foster winner Kingsbarns.
