Practical Joke and Mendelssohn On Top at OBS

Practical Joke proved yet again to be the star of the show when his colt out of Mobeautiful was the most expensive yearling purchased during the first session of the OBS Winter Mixed Sale with Mendelssohn the sire of the top yearling filly.

Bought for $130,000 by Clark Shepherd from Summerfield, the colt is the first foal out of the winning Uncle Mo daughter Mobeautiful, a granddaughter of stakes winner High Speed Access. Bred by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, the colt’s fourth dam is Grade II winner and successful broodmare Speed Dialer. Having 12 stakes performers under her name, Speed Dialer is also a half-sister to Canadian Champion Wavering Girl among multiple stakes winning siblings.

The most expensive yearling filly of the session is from the first crop of Practical Joke’s Grade I-winning stablemate Mendelssohn.

Sold for $95,000 to Democracy Bloodstock from Stuart Morris’s consignment, the France and Irwin J. Weiner-bred is the second foal out of the stakes placed Simply Confection. That mare is a half-sister to the dam of stakes winner and Grade II-placed inflexibility, stakes winner Halo Again, and Grade II-placed Fundamental. Simply Confection’s own dam is also a full sister to two-time champion Ashado and Grade I winner Sunriver.

Three-time Grade I winner Practical Joke has been popular with buyers, seeing his first crop yearlings sell for up to $575,000 and his second crop of weanlings bring up to $185,000. Mendelssohn’s first crop has caught the attention of buyers with his first weanlings selling for up to $300,000, including a session topper at the Keeneland November Sale.
