Practical Joke In Demand at Keeneland September

Proving to be a talented sire with his first crop on the track this year, Practical Joke was as popular as ever at Keeneland September on Thursday when five of his six sold brought more than $150,000.

That group was led by a $750,000 purchase by Talla Racing from St. George Sales late in the day.

The first foal out of Gal Factor, the colt’s dam is a half-sister to Grade I winner Super Stock and Grade I-placed Boujie Girl. Under this colt’s third dam is champion Gabbywitha G and two other stakes performers, including the dam of Grade I winner Heir Kitty.

Proving the family is durable, there is also a Puerto Rican champion on the page who won 28 of his 47 starts.

A little over 100 hips before his $750,000 colt, Phill Schoenthal purchased a $575,000 filly for D. Hatman Thoroughbreds.

Consigned by St George Sales, the filly is a half-sister to stakes winner Bodecream and Group III-placed Califante. Their dam is following in the footsteps of her own dam and granddam with Call Mariah’s dam Chasethewildwind producing Grade I winners Albertus Maximus and Daredevil.

Another one of Chasethewildwind’s daughters is also the granddam of Grade III winner One Liner – proving that the sireline Practical Joke comes from works with the family.

It was a big day all around for the leading freshman with White Birch Farm going to $310,000 to secure his filly out of A. P. Candy.

The dam of stakes-placed Knox Court from her first to race, A.P. Candy comes from a long line of stakes producers as a half-sister to stakes winning Wind Fire, who also produced stakes placed Air Force Jet. This filly’s second dam is a full sister to Grade I winner Majestic Warrior and stakes winner Crystal Current with the trio out of dual Grade I winner Dream Supreme.

Dream Supreme produced 10 winners with five of those placing in stakes and Crystal Current another stakes producer for the family with two four stakes horses under her name.

Practical Joke’s Thursday yearlings sold for $750,000, $575,00, $310,000, $270,000, etc with an average of $355,833 for six sold. In all, Practical Joke’s first 11 sold during the Keeneland September Yearling Sale have averaged $274,091 with a median of $220,000.
