Proud Starlet Continues Mendelssohn’s Good Week
It was a big debut performance for Proud Starlet (2f Mendelssohn x Proud Heroine, by Proud Citizen) at Del Mar on Saturday with a 4 ¼ length victory.
Racing over 5 ½ furlongs on the dirt, the filly vied for the lead almost immediately out of the gate and held a slim adventure early on. She grabbed a clear advantage nearly half way through the race and from there worked to extend it.
Feeling a few taps in the final furlong, she won by 4 ¼ lengths over Tiz The Law’s Usha in the end.
Trained by Tim Yakteen for Trevor Smith, Usha was a $220,000 OBS April juvenile purchase earlier this year.
The George Krikorian-bred is out of a granddaughter of the dual Grade I winner Hollywood Story. That mare produced Grade I winner Honor A.P. and three other stakes performers from her seven winners.
Proud Heroine had a colt by Mendelssohn last year as well.
It has been a huge eight days for Mendelssohn, whose eight-win day last Saturday was followed up by four other winners in the following seven days – including winners at Saratoga and Del Mar.
