Bast (Uncle Mo) winning the Gr.1 Debutante Stakes

Seventh Grade I Winner for Uncle Mo

Brilliant filly Bast (2f Uncle Mo x Laffina, by Arch) became the seventh Grade I winner for her sire Uncle Mo when taking out the $300,000 Grade I Debutante Stakes at Del Mar on Saturday at just her second start.

The Bob Baffert trained filly was second on debut at Del Mar on August 11, but with the addition of blinkers turned in a sensational gallop to win the seven furlong sprint by nearly nine lengths.

“She needed the blinkers the first time, but I wanted to get a race in her before the Debutante,” said Baffert.

“She came back after that race and worked so well I knew she was ready to go. The blinker is really minimal. We’ll definitely look at the [GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies] and races like that down the road.”

A $200,000 Keeneland November Weanling, Bast was bought for $500,000 as a yearling at the Fasig Tipton Saratoga August Sale and runs for Baoma Corporation.

She is the 51st stakes-winner for Uncle Mo and is the first winner for Laffina, a half-sister to Grade II winner Manana Mclir and stakes-winners Big Sur and Charming n Lovable, the dam of Grade I winner Fault.
