Son Of Soldier Of Fortune A Comfortable Winner Over Fences

Monday saw useful hurdler City Chief (6g Soldier Of Fortune - Galant Ferns, by Bob Back) get off the mark over fences in good style at Hereford.

Nicky Henderson’s dual hurdle winner was sent off favourite for the three mile and one furlong contest, with Nico de Boinville riding the bay to chase the leader for much of the way. Ridden to lead from two out, he was clear by the final fence and went on to score by five and a half lengths from Grade 3 performer Coconut Splash.

City Chief first demonstrated his jumping talents when making a winning debut for Denis Murphy in a four-year-old maiden, after which he sold to Highflyer Bloodstock for £210,000. Now owned by Mrs Donnelly, the son of Soldier Of Fortune was bred by Liam Kenny.
