Uncle Mo’s $1.1 Million Son Stays Undefeated

Uncle Mo’s undefeated $1.1 million son Shaaz (4c Uncle Mo x Miss Ocean City, by Mineshaft) stayed undefeated on Saturday when he won a Santa Anita Allowance Optional Claiming race by 2 3/4 lengths.

Racing over a mile on the dirt, Shaaz broke strongly to take the lead under Mike Smith with a horse at his hip. Smith looked confident on his mount as he let Shaaz gallop at his own pace before letting his reins out a notch as they passed the quarter pole.

Shaaz wasn’t asked for much down the stretch but the colt still extended well to win easily and take his record to three-from-three.

Owner Michael Lund Petersen purchased the Bob Baffert trainee at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, where he topped the leaderboard by more than $200,000.

Bred by the William M. Backer Revocable Trust in Virginia, Shaaz is one of four winners from five to race out of Miss Ocean City. That mare’s runners also include Scat Daddy’s Grade II winner Azar and six-time winner In The Deep. Miss Ocean City is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Woodlander and stakes winner Admiral Alex with another sister producing multiple Grade II winner Coal Front among four stakes performers.

Shaaz was one of two big winners for Uncle Mo on the day with his daughter Family Way winning the Grade III Orchid Stakes at Gulfstream.
