Uncle Mo's Mo Mosa Secures First Stakes Victory

Uncle Mo’s graded stakes-placed son Mo Mosa (4c Uncle Mo x Roughing, by Eskendereya) became his sire’s newest stakes winner on Saturday when taking out the Bosselman Pump and Pantry/Gus Fonner Stakes.

Racing over 1 1/16 miles on the dirt at Fonner Park, the colt raced to the inside of the leader with spot on the rail. He was asked to pick up the pace by Armando Martinez as they entered the final turn and had a length on the field as they came into the stretch.

Mo Mosa’s lead was cut down as they approached the line but it was plenty big enough to secure his fifth career victory by 1 ½ lengths for owner-breeders Perry and Denise Martin.

Trained by Mike Maker, Mo Mosa has hit the board in 10 of his 15 starts for $213,875 in earnings.

“He broke sharp, I never asked him, and he just took me [to the front],” winning rider Armando Martinez said. “When I asked him to run down the stretch, he switched leads and he responded.”

Mo Mosa’s dam Roughing was bought by the Martins for $500,000 while in foal with this colt for her second foal. Roughing is a half-sister to Grade I winner Diplomat Lady and Grade II winner Dream Play, who is the dam of Fastnet Rock’s Grade II winner Zululand. Other horses under his second dam also include Grade I winner Hunter O’Riley and stakes winners Gangbuster, Anythingyoucando, and Forest Fire.

Mo Mosa is one of 13 stakes winners from Uncle Mo’s 2017 crop with the stallion hitting at 14% stakes performers to runners from that 4-year-old class.
