Wondrwherecraigis (Munnings) wins the Fire Plug Stakes at Laurel Park

Wondrwherecraigis Kicks Off 2022 With Fire Plug Victory

Munnings’ Wondrwherecraigis (5g Munnings x Social Assassin, by Giant’s Causeway) started 2022 the same way he left 2021 – with a stakes victory when recording a win in the Fire Plug Stakes on Saturday.

Coming off a win in the Grade III Bold Ruler Handicap, Brittany Russell had the gelding ready to go and go he did. Racing as a heavy favorite, Wondrwherecraigis went straight to the lead in the six furlong race and from there he outclassed his rivals. Penguin Power tried to stick with him early then Youngest of Five took up that duty but it was never a truly fair fight.

Wondrwherecraigis started pulling away late in the race and ended his dominating performance by 3 ¾ lengths.

It was the seventh win in 11 starts for Wondrwherecraigis, who races for Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group, Madaket Stables, and Bethlehem Stables. Among those seven victories are three stakes wins with the gelding also having placings in two others.

Wondrwherecraigis was bred in Kentucky by Fleur de Lis Stables and is out of a half-sister to Grade II-placed McKale and stakes-placed Orquidias. The gelding’s granddam is also a half-sister to three-time Grade I winner Affirmed Success among others.

Munnings has gotten off to a fast start in 2022 with two stakes winners in two days this weekend and five overall to lead all Northern Hemisphere sires. Munnings’ Saturday also included Kaylasaurus finishing second in the What a Summer Stakes one race before Wondrwherecraigis’s victory.
