A three-quarter sister-in-blood to million dollar earner Cowboy Cal, Mississippi Delta (5m Giant’s Causeway x Texas to a Tee, by Purge) scored a tenacious victory in the $250,000 Grade III Intercontinental Stakes at Belmont on Thursday.
A multiple stakes-winner going into this seven furlong assignment, the Mark Casse trained mare showed great courage under pressure at the finish to claim a head win over Conquest Babayaga (4m Uncle Mo x Undercover Justice, by Lawyer Ron) to give Coolmore sires first and second in the feature event.
“I got a very good trip. She broke good and we were exactly where I wanted to be. Last time, she got very soft turf. I know she’s a nice filly and she’s better than what she showed last time. Today, the grass was perfect for her and she ran her race,” said winning rider Jose Lezcano.
Raced by Mike Rutherford and Terry Green, Mississippi Delta has the overall record of seven wins from 19 starts and over $700,000 in prizemoney.
By champion sire Giant’s Causeway, she is the first winner for Texas to a Tee, a half-sister to multiple Grade II winner Cowboy Cal from the family of Grade I winner Behrens.
