It’s been a long time coming, but at last talented entire Imagining (6h Giant’s Causeway x Daydreaming, by AP Indy) has cracked it for a win at the elite level claiming the Grade I Man O’War Stakes at Belmont on the weekend.
A homebred for the Phipps stable prepared by Claude R McGaughey III, Imagining led throughout to win the 1 and 3/8th mile contest on the turf by three-quarters of a length.
“Shug told me there wasn’t probably going to be a lot of speed in the race and he was coming off a couple of months off, so he’d probably show some speed and he did,” said winning rider Joel Rosario.
“He’s a game horse. Every time a horse came to him, he’s a fighter. I was really happy with him today.”
Imagining will now seek further Grade I success with the Grade I Manhattan Handicap on June 7 named as his next target.
Imagining has the overall record of eight wins from 16 starts with prizemoney of $813,114 and is one of three winners from Grade II winner Daydreaming, a sister to the dams of Grade I stars Super Saver and Bluegrass Cat.
Imagining is the 28th Grade I winner worldwide for champion sire Giant’s Causeway, who has made his presence felt in nearly every corner of the globe.
