Champion sire Giant’s Causeway has closed out the year with a new Grade I winner after progressive filly Book Review (3f Giant’s Causeway x Clever Babe, by Distorted Humor) captured the Grade I La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita on Boxing Day.
Making her first run for Bob Baffert, having previously been trained on the East Coast by Chad Brown, Book Review pulled out a career best performance to down Reneesgotzip and My Miss Aurelia in the seven furlong sprint.
A homebred for Gary and Mary West Stables, Book Review settled back off the leaders in a fast run race and surged late to snatch a narrow neck victory.
“The Wests wanted to see the horse run here and this race really looked like the logical spot for her,” Baffert said after the win.
“She got here, she looked great, she trained really well, so we took a stab at it and it worked out.”
Book Review has the overall record of five wins and three placings from 10 starts and prizemoney just shy of $600,000.
“If you look at her form, she either shows up or she doesn’t, and today was a day to show up,” Baffert continued.
“I’m happy. She ran great. It’s great to be here opening day. I love opening day and to win a Grade I, that’s like a Christmas gift to myself.”
Book Review is the 24th Grade I winner for champion sire Giant’s Causeway and is from Clever Babe, a half-sister by Distorted Humor to Grade I winner Irish Smoke.
