Lightly raced entire Red Rifle (4h Giant’s Causeway x May Night, by Gulch) scored a first Black Type success in the $100,000 Maxxam Gold Cup Stakes at Sam Houston Park on Sunday.
Prepared by Todd Pletcher, Red Rifle has always shown promise and was driven straight to the lead by Robby Albarado.
He dominated throughout before surging clear to win the 1 and 1/18th mile contest by two and three-quarter lengths over Frac Daddy (4h Scat Daddy x Skipper’s Mate, by Skip Away).
A $250,000 Keeneland September Yearling, Red Rifle is from stakes-winning Gulch mare May Night.
He is the 139th stakes-winner worldwide for champion sire Giant’s Causeway.
