A half-brother to US Horse of the Year, Ghostzapper, City Wolf (4h Giant’s Causeway x Baby Zip, by Relaunch) posted his first Black Type success when capturing the Grade III Durham Cup at Woodbine on Sunday.
Raced by Stronach Stables, City Wolf started his career with Todd Pletcher, but failed to fire up and was transferred to Reade Baker for whom he was now won four straight races this year.
City Wolf settled third and ran home strongly in the stretch to win the 1 and 1/8th mile contest by two and a quarter lengths, his overall record four wins and two placings from nine starts with prizemoney in excess of $211,000.
“Obviously he’s got a great pedigree. I saw the replays of his races and he tries to get out at the start, so I thought if we could cure that, we’d have a nice horse, but I didn’t think he’d be this good,” Baker said.
“He still carries his head funny–I don’t know what that is, but he runs good enough.”
A half-brother to the great champion Ghostzapper and Grade I winner City Zip, City Wolf is the third stakes-winner from US Broodmare of the Year Baby Zip, a stakes-winning daughter of Relaunch.
