Another WA Derby Winner for Pierro

A homebred for Bob and Sandra Peters prepared by Grant and Alana Williams, three year-old gelding Regal Power (3g Pierro x Broadway Belle, by Redoute's Choice) was a short priced favourite to win the Group II WATC West Australian Derby at Ascot on Saturday and arrived in the last stride to emulate the success of his full brother Power, who won the race last year.

He drew wide and settled back in the field, charging to the line for William Pike to win the 2400 metre staying test by a short head.

"I thought he would get there. But then I started to calculate how many extra lengths he had covered on top of what all the others had done, but I did ask him to stay in the clear so he did that," said Bob Peters.

"He was good today. He has been very unlucky in a lot of his early races, we were riding him for luck and the luck didn't come. He got caught up and caught up but if you look at his record, I think it's five or six stakes race he has run a place in, and now he has won a couple."

It was his third Black Type win and took his overall record to four wins and five placings from 13 starts with prizemoney over $473,000.

Regal Power is the third winner from stakes-winning Redoute’s Choice mare Broadway Belle and is a full brother to Group II WATC Derby winner Action.

He is also a brother-in-blood to the Peters homebreds Arcadia Queen, winner of the Group I WATC Kingston Town Classic and Arcadia Prince, winner of the Group III WATC Scahill Stakes.

Broadway Belle has been a regular visitor to Coolmore and has a yearling colt by Vancouver that was passed in at Inglis Easter, a weanling filly by American Pharoah (USA) and is now back in foal to Pierro, who covered 228 mares last spring at a fee of $88,000.
