Winter (Galileo) winning the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh

Winter completes Guineas double for amazing Galileo

Just 24 hours after Churchill (3c Galileo-Meow, by Storm Cat) completed a rare English-Irish 2,000 Guineas double, Galileo’s daughter Winter (3f Galileo-Laddies Poker Two, by Choisir) achieved the same feat in the fillies’ equivalent.

Winter, like Churchill trained by Aidan O’Brien, had run out a ready winner of the G1 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket and she scored with even greater ease in the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh on Sunday.

Ryan Moore, aboard the grey, hit the front around two furlongs from home and eventually won by four and three-quarter lengths.

She led home a 1-2-3 for her stable, with Roly Poly (3f War Front–Misty For Me, by Galileo) coming second and Hydrangea (3f Galileo-Beauty Is Truth, by Pivotal) taking third.

“Ryan was very impressed with her. He said she was as easy a classic winner as you could believe,” said O’Brien. “If everything went well you'd be thinking of the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot with her, because she is a good strong traveller. When Ryan let her down she just went. She'll definitely get a mile-and-a-quarter, you'd imagine, when she's getting a mile well here.”

Moore added: “It was very easy. She gave me a lovely ride and took me into the race without me asking her a thing. I couldn’t be more impressed - she was relentless and kept building all the way to the line.

“It rode like a piece of work to her and the way she felt today there is no reason that she will not keep progressing. She will probably get a little bit further and a mile or a mile and a quarter will probably come alike to her, but she’s a fast filly.”
