Waldgeist is new G1 star for Galileo
The incredible Galileo was responsible for a new G1 winner on Sunday when Andre Fabre sent out Waldgeist (2c Galileo-Waldlerche, by Monsun) to win the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud in France.
The exciting juvenile, a winner at Chantilly on his debut, got up in the final furlong of the mile contest to score under Pierre-Charles Boudot.
Fabre commented: “He had excuses for his defeat in the Conde, having suffered a troubled run, and has done nothing but improve since. He is of course finished for the season, his programme is all set for next year and a Classic campaign is on the agenda. With that in mind, I recently gave him an entry in the G1 Irish Derby.”
Boudot added: ”He is still quite tender and has plenty to learn so we wanted to give him a good lesson last time. He still lacks a little strength but has a lot of quality and will make a good three-year-old. It is great to win the race for my boss and he is certainly a horse to watch out for next year.”
Bookmakers were impressed with the victory and Waldgeist is now joint second-favourite for the 2017 Derby with several firms.
