Waipiro (Australia) Impresses At Newmarket

Another Classic Contender Emerges For Australia

Waipiro (3c Australia - London Plane, by Danehill Dancer) emerged as Australia’s second Classic contender of the week when running out an impressive winner of the ten furlong Novice Stakes at Newmarket.

Trained by Ed Walker for PK Siu, the Epsom Derby entrant raced just once as a juvenile and faced three previous winners on his three-year-old return. Ridden prominently by Tom Marquand, he was pushed along to lead approaching the final furlong and kicked clear soon after, going on to win by three and a half lengths.

Thursday’s race has previously produced some talented types, with last year’s winner New London going on to finish second in the St Leger, while 2019 winner Jalmoud later finished third in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris won by Japan (Galileo).

Ed Walker later revealed that the Shane Molan-bred Waipiro would now be aimed at a Derby Trial. It comes just a day after Canberra Legend (Australia) won the Listed Feilden Stakes at the same meeting, a performance which has connections considering Classic options.
