Bangkok (Australia) winning the Listed Winter Derby Trial at Lingfield

Australia Colt Lands Listed Contest In Record Time

Bangkok (4c Australia - Tanaghum, by Darshaan) made a perfect start to the year when winning Saturday’s Listed Winter Derby Trial in track record time at Lingfield.

A Group 3 winner as a three-year-old, he was last seen finishing second in the valuable Qatar Derby in December and remained over the ten furlong trip for Saturday’s feature. Sent off favourite under Rob Horny, the Andrew Balding-trained colt raced in midfield, improving to track the leader from two out and was shaken up to lead approaching the final furlong. Racing clear, he won by four and a half lengths in comfortable fashion.

Connections later revealed their hopes for an invite to the Saudi Cup, while alternative aims include the Winter Derby and Easter Classic. Owned by King Power Racing, Bangkok was bred by Barronstown Stud, who sold him as a yearling for 500,000gns to Sackville Donald.

The bay is closely related to dual Stakes winner Tactic (Sadler’s Wells) and Listed scorer Yaazy, and is a half-brother to another two black-type performers. He comes from the first crop of dual Derby hero Australia, who commands €27,500 at Coolmore Stud this season.
