Point Lonsdale (Australia) Wins On Debut At The Curragh

Brother To Broome Books Ticket To Ascot

Point Lonsdale (2c Australia - Sweepstake, by Acclamation) will be aimed at the Chesham Stakes after making an impressive debut at the Curragh on Wednesday.

The own-brother to Broome was sent off favourite for the seven furlong maiden and made all of the running under Seamie Heffernan. Keeping on strongly from the two furlong marker, he raced clear inside the final furlong to win by five and a half lengths.

Speaking after the race, winning trainer Aidan O’Brien said, “He was working very smart and we wanted to get him out as we felt he was a horse for the Chesham. He shows everything at home. He travels, he quickens and relaxes - all the right stuff.”

Owned by Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Westerber, Point Lonsdale was bought by MV Magnier as a yearling for 575,000gns. Bred by Epona Bloodstock, his brother Broome was also a talented juvenile, finishing second at Group 1 level, and has since won five Stakes contest.

Call Me Sweetheart (3f Australia- Potion, by Pivotal) completed a double on the card for O’Brien when justifying favouritism in the fillies’ maiden over a mile and a half.

Chasing the leaders under Wayne Lordan, the bay made good headway approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly to lead close home. She led by a short head on the line from Simply A Dream (Camelot), an own-sister to dual Group winner Hunting Horn (Camelot).

Call Me Sweetheart was bred by Mrs Sue Ann Foley, who owns the daughter of Australia with Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith.
