Camelot Filly Draws Clear From Colts At Leopardstown
The well-regarded Azazat (3f Camelot - Azama, by Sea The Stars) appeared to relish the step up in trip when drawing clear to win Sunday’s mile and a half maiden at Leopardstown.
Trained by Dermot Weld for owner/breeder HH Aga Khan, the daughter of Camelot was narrowly denied in a Curragh maiden on her sole juvenile start and finished a fine third on reappearance last month. Taking on colts for the first time on Sunday, she was sent off favourite under Colin Keane, who rode the bay prominently throughout. Pushed along two furlongs from home, she led approaching the final furlong and was ridden clear to score by four lengths and three quarters.
Speaking after the race, assistant trainer Kris Weld said, “Azazat is a lovely filly and Colin was very complimentary. Hopefully she has a good future.”
Weld mentioned the Oaks Trial at Naas as a possible target for Azazat, who holds entries in the Epsom Oaks, Irish Oaks and Ribblesdale Stakes.
