Camelot’s Latest Winner To Step Up In Class

The well-regarded Shackleton (2c Camelot – Damaniyat Girl, by Elusive Quality) looks set for a step up in class after justifying favouritism at the Curragh on Sunday.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt had bumped into some classy colts on his first two starts, but enjoyed a form boost when Tennessee Stud finished second in the Beresford Stakes, as he had finished second to the son of Wootton Bassett earlier this month. Shackleton was sent off favourite to go one better in the opening maiden over a mile and one furlong, with Ryan Moore riding the bay to make all. The bay was asked to quicken three furlongs from home and was ridden a furlong out, from which he kept on well to win by a length and a quarter.

“We're delighted with him,” O’Brien reported. “Ryan said he was very green, that it was a very strong headwind and it wasn't easy out there. He's a horse that will get a trip and we could look at the mile-and-a-quarter race in Saint-Cloud for him.”

The Peter Brant and Coolmore-owned colt also holds an entry in the Group 1 Futurity Trophy in late October. Bred by Lynch Bages Ltd, the son of Camelot sold for 200,000gns as a yearling.
