Classy Edition (Classic Empire) winning the Key Cents Stakes at Aqueduct

Classy Edition Stays Undefeated in Key Cents

Classy Edition (2f Classic Empire x Newbie, by Bernardini) added a second stakes victory in three career starts to her undefeated record Sunday with a win in the Key Cents Stakes at Aqueduct.

The six furlong dirt race saw the Todd Pletcher trainee go off as the favorite and for good reason.

The filly was last for the first sixteenth of a mile in the spread out field before sprinting up closer to the front. She raced alongside Cupid daughter Cupid’s Heart down the backstretch as Munnings daughter Miss Alacrity pressed the pacesetter.

Classy Edition was asked for her best in midturn and she kicked up the pace to enter the six-way battle for the lead as the field raced toward the final furlong. She grabbed the lead just outside the final sixteenth and started to draw away as Practical Joke’s Shesawildjoker took third. In the end, Classy Edition won by 3 ½ lengths with Shesawildjoker just a neck away from earning second place honors.

Bred in New York by Chester and Mary Broman, Classy Edition was purchased by racing owners Robert and Lawana Low for $550,000 earlier this year at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale.

The filly is one of three stakes performers for her dam Newbie alongside multiple stakes winner Newly Minted and multiple stakes-placed New Girl In Town. A two-time winner herself, Newbie is out of the stakes winning and Grade II-placed Changeisgonnacome.

Newbie had an American Pharoah colt last year, who was also bred in New York.

In a weekend that has seen every freshman sire on Coolmore America’s roster win at least two races, Classic Empire has sired three – one each on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
