Cupid Looks to Carry Momentum into Fasig-Tipton Midlantic

Well received at this year’s 2-year-old sales Cupid looks to continue his successful juvenile sales season this week at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale. In all, the stallion sends nine horses from his first crop through the ring over the two days.

Galloping during the Under Tack show was Hip 22 consigned by Crane Thoroughbred Services. A half-brother to three stakes performers, the colt out of Mayfield was bred in Kentucky by Circular Road Breeders and has such a packed page that only two dams fit. That second dam is the two-time winner Ahpo Hel, whose 12 winners include four stakes winners.

But even more impressive is the producing power she’s passed on to her daughters. In addition to Mayfield, one of Ahpo Hel’s daughters is the third dam of the popular Grade I winner Got Stormy and granddam of Tale of the Cat’s Grade II winner Overdriven. Ahpo Hel’s two-time winning daughter General Jeanne is the dam of Justwhistledixie,who herself is the dam of Grade I Breeders’ Cup winner and sire of Maximum Security New Year’s Day and that stallion’s three graded stakes winning brothers Mohaymen, Encforceable, and Kingly.

Breezing just two ticks off the bullet for an eighth was Hip 233, stopping the clock in :10.2. Offered by Julie Davies, the colt is the second foal for Tell The Duchess and was bred in Ontario by Caldara Farm, Patrick Costello, David Whitford, and Tom Zwiesler. His third dam Alleged Devotion is a half-sister to European champion Balanchine, with Alleged Devotion proving to be a strong producer herself.

The mare’s nine winners included four stakes winners and seven stakes performers overall with her Group III-placed Devoted To You better known as the dam of Group I Irish Derby winner Sovereign. Alleged Devotion’s Grade III winning daughter Humble Eight is also the dam of stakes winner and Group II-placed Stage Call with an unraced daughter producing two Grade II winners.

An $80,000 yearling purchase bred by Jeremiah Desmond, the first foal out of Snow goes through the ring as Hip 194 from the Eddie Woods consignment. That colt’s Quality Road dam is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner and Grade I-placed Quindici man and the multiple graded stakes placed Spurrier.

The colt’s second dam Humble is a half-sister to the stakes winning dam of multiple Grade I winner Wild Rush with another one of that runner’s siblings the matriarch of a family that includes graded stakes winners Summer Raven, Lewis Bay, Winslow Homer, ect. A family full of producers, Another of Humble’s half-sisters is the dam of Group I winner Hayil and granddam of Group I winner Shalaa.

Out of a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Highway Star is Hip 188 from All Dreams Equine. The New York-bred filly bred by Cheryl Prudhomme, Dr. Michael Gallivan, and Sue Dayton is the third foal from Skinnydipper, who is also a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Captain Bombastic. Under this filly’s third dam is multiple stakes winner Friend Or Foe, stakes winner Star Grazing, and the dam of stakes winner Surge of Pride.

Other Cupid offerings include Shamrock Stable’s Hip 441, out of a full sister to Tale of the Cat’s stakes winner Melodic; Hip 62 from Eddie Woods, whose dam is a half-sister to Grade II-placed Victory Nor Defeat; and Marshall Silverman-offered Hip 560, a half-brother to Tale of the Cat’s stakes-placed Agi’s Cait with the pair out of a half-sister to Group I winner Penelopa.

Cupid’s first offering through the ring is Hip 22 on Monday with his first offering on Tuesday being Hip 441. Both sessions of the sale start at 11:00 a.m. ET.
