Deep Satin Wins Virginia Oaks for American Pharoah

One start after breaking her maiden at Saratoga, Deep Satin (3f American Pharoah x Take The Ribbon, by Chester House) added a stakes victory to her record with a win in the Virginia Oaks.

The 1 1/8-mile turf race saw the filly angle in to race a few paths off the rail when racing just outside a horse a few lengths behind a pair of leaders. There was no urgency early on for any of the runners with Deep Satin looking relaxed as she gradually moved up in the turn.

The filly had command of the race in the stretch, but it wasn’t going to be easy. Style Points engaged the leader in the final furlong, but Deep Satin refused to back down. At the line the pair was even with each other and even the judge couldn’t separate them, declaring a dead heat.

Trained by Cherie DeVaux, Deep Satin races for breeder Eurowest Bloodstock Services and John Gunther. She is a second generation homebred for her breeder, who also bred her Grade III winning dam Take The Ribbon.

Also Grade I-placed, Take The Ribbon is a successful broodmare with three stakes performers among her eight winners. That group includes Grade I-placed Bookrunner and stakes placed Take These Chains. Another one of the mare’s daughters is a stakes producer as the dam of Grade III winner Love and Thunder.

Take The Ribbon is a half-sister to five other stakes winners, including Glinda The Good – who produced champion Good Magic.

Take The Ribbon has a Justify 2-year-old named Deep Manhattan as her final foal.

This is the ninth stakes winner of the year for American Pharoah, putting him ninth among all North American sires.
