G2 Miss Grillo Win For Breeders’ Cup Bound Scythian
The versatility of Tiz The Law runners continued to be on display Sunday when Lawrence Goichman homebred Scythian (2f Tiz The Law x Dean Henry, by Empire Maker) punched her ticket to the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in the Grade II Miss Grillo Stakes.
The 1 1/16 mile turf race saw Scythian settle soon after the break to run just a few lengths off the leader. Jockey Junior Alvarado left her alone until the quarter pole when he started asking her to pick up the pace. It was at that point that one of the leaders went incredibly wide and Scythian quickly took advantage.
Inheriting the lead with the incident in the turn, Scythian took full advantage to win easily by 2 ½ lengths.
"She ran great,” said Alvarado. “She ran like we thought she would. She beat the boys last time and she was 11-1 today - you don't have to put me favorite, but I thought she was very live going against the fillies. Whatever happens, I still think she would be very tough. When I turned for home, she gave me a nice turn of foot. She won very impressively today.
Trained by Bill Mott, Scythian has won both of her turf starts and was second in her only start on the dirt.
Scythian is the second stakes performer out of the stakes winning Dean Henry alongside Bonita Cat with Dean Henry producing seven winners from seven named foals. Dean Henry is a half-sister to Grade II winner and Grade I placed Read The Footnotes with the family seeing stakes winners under each of Scythian’s four dams on the page.
Among the horses listed are Grade I winner Fire The Groom – who produced champion Stravinsky and Moscow Ballet.
Scythian’s victory comes less than 24 hours after Non Complaint earned her own Breeders’ Cup spot in the Juvenile Fillies with a win in the Grade II Oak Leaf Stakes on the dirt.
