Group 2 Win Completes Stakes Double For Camelot
Trained by Andre Fabre for owner/breeder Wertheimer & Frere, the son of Camelot was narrowly denied in a similar contest last season, before taking third in the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak. Successful on his seasonal return in March, he was reunited with Maxime Guyon on Monday and chased the leaders for much of the way. Pushed along after the three furlong marker, he was ridden two furlongs from home and kept on well to lead close home.
Representing the Wertheimer family, racing manager Pierre-Yves Bureau said, “He’s a good horse. He had a perfect trip today and is back to his level.”
Successful on his seasonal return, the Gestut Schlenderhan-owned bay was sent off favourite for the nine furlong contest and chased the leader for much of the way under Andrasch Starke. Leading on the turn for home, he was asked to quicken approaching the two furlong marker and ran on well to win by a length, with another length and a half back to Queroyal (Churchill) in third.
Bred by Stall Ullmann, the lightly-raced Aguirre won two of his four starts last season, when he also placed at Listed level.
