Munnys Gold Romps in Stakes Debut

Munnings registered a sixth stakes winner of the year on Sunday when Munnys Gold (3f Munnings x Haraawa, by Medaglia d’Oro) romped to a 17 ¼ length victory in the Sophomore Fillies Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.

Coming into the race undefeated in two starts, the filly was stretching out to seven furlongs for the first time and showed the added distance was no problem at all. She dueled with Pretty’n Awesome down the backstretch while held in hand by Irad Ortiz Jr.

He gave her the cue to start stretching out around the turn and she was off like a shot from there, having 17 ¼ lengths on the rest of the field by the time she hit the line.

Trained by Todd Pletcher for Lawana and Robert Low, Munnys Gold has won her three starts by a combined 38 lengths. The Nickstar Farms-bred filly was a $300,000 Fasig-Tipton July purchase by the Lows from Four Star Sales.

Munnys Gold is one of two winners from two to race out of a daughter of the stakes placed Alseera. That mare is a half-sister to stakes winner Unico Idolo and out of a full sister to Grade I winner Anees. This is also the family of Grade I winners Gold and Ivory, Heart of Darkness, and Grand Couturier.

Munnings’ six stakes winners is the third best of all North American sires this year while his 10 stakes performers is fifth best in the group.
