Munnings head shot

Sir Alfred James Wins Russell Road

Sir Alfred James (6g Munnings x Super Phoebe, by Malabar Gold) returned to the winner’s circle Friday night when the gelding took home the Russel Road Stakes at Charles Town.

One of the back markers of the seven-furlong dirt race, Sir Alfred James started making his bid for the lead nearing the turn. By the time they were half way around it, he’d engaged the leaders and entered a three-way duel for the lead as they headed into the final furlong.

His rivals faded away far into the battle and from there, he pulled away to win by 1 ½ lengths with the third placed runner nearly five lengths behind

It’s the second stakes win of the year for Sir Alfred James, who has won over $362,050 this year for conditioner and owner Norman Cash. In all, the gelding has won nine of his 31 starts with eight other top three finishes for $786,964 in three seasons of racing.

Out of Super Phoebe, Sir Alfred James is a half-brother to three-time Grade I winner Got Stormy and to the stakes-placed Sky Gold. Their dam is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Smooth Air and Grade II winner Overdriven.

One of 13 stakes winners and 24 stakes performers for Munnings in 2022, he is also one of 126 winners for the stallion – good for second among all General Sires this year.
