Sporting John (Getaway) Leads Home A 1 2 For Getaway At Borris House

Sons Of Getaway And Yeats In Demand At Cheltenham Sale

Sporting John (4g Getaway - Wild Spell, by Oscar) impressed many with his winning point-to-point debut and was dually rewarded for his performance when Kieran McManus went to £160,000 for him at the Cheltenham Festival Sale.

The Matthew Flynn O’Connor-trained gelding won a competitive four-year-old maiden at Borris earlier in the month, scoring by two and a half lengths under Jimmy O’Rourke. Bred by Stephanie Hanly, Sporting John comes from the family of the top-class Oscar Whisky (Oscar), whom Hanly also bred.

Earlier in the sale, trainer Paul Nicholls secured John Hanlon’s winning newcomer Young Buck (5g Yeats - Pepsi Starlet, by Heavenly Manna) for £150,000. The bay clocked the fastest time of the day when winning the five-year-old maiden at Nenagh last month, in which he drew five lengths clear of the runner-up and a further 15 lengths clear of the third horse.

He, too, is well-bred, being a half-brother to Grade 3 winner Queens Wild (Westerner), from the family of talented chaser Bradbury Star. Bred by Robert Guiry, his half-brother by Westerner sold for €68,000 at last year’s Derby Sale to Highflyer Bloodstock and Warren Greatrex.
