Soqui Leads Chilean G2 Trifecta For Practical Joke

It was a trifecta for Practical Joke in the Group II Grand Prix Criadores Eugenio Zegers Leon on Saturday when his son Soqui (2c Practical Joke x Wiki, by Scat Daddy) registered his first stakes victory in the race.

The one-mile dirt race saw Soqui break from the outside gate before angling inside to take a spot in midpack a few paths off the rail as three horses dueled in front. Entering the turn, Soqui slid through a hole to race inside the leaders and then take over as they entered the stretch.

Soqui was off like a shot and there was no catching him in the end with the juvenile winning by 3 ¼ lengths over Practical Joke’s Morricone with fellow Practical Joke son Viejo Lobo in third. Practical Joke was also the sire of the fifth placed runner as well.

Trained by Jose Alverez, he races for Don Simon and was bred by Haras Paso Nevado. The colt is one of four winners out of the winning Scat Daddy mare Wiki. That mare is a three-quarter sister to Chilean champion Wapi and a half-sister to champions We Can Seek and Weekend Trip.

Lookin At Lucky’s stakes winning Lucky Winner is also under his second dam.

Practical Joke leads all U.S.-based third crop sires by winners, stakes winners, and graded stakes winners in 2023. A successful sire worldwide, Practical Joke is the sire of 24 stakes winners around the world with 16 of those being at the graded level, led by six Grade I winners.

The Scat Daddy cross has proven successful for Practical Joke with four graded stakes winners and 11 stakes performers from 23 runners led by two Group I winners.
