The Nipper (4f Scorpion-Sharp Single, by Supreme Leader) made a brilliant winning debut for trainer Warren Greatrex at Bangor on Saturday evening.
The well-backed Scorpion filly, bred by W L Smith and Partners, oozed class as she came home 19 lengths of her opposition in the 2m 1f bumper.
“Some leading stables had runners in this, but a well-fancied newcomer destroyed her rivals under front-running tactics,” commented the Racing Post. “THE NIPPER, the sixth foal of a 2m chase winner, …was ridden positively, quickened up a long way from home and won easily despite tiring. (She was) 5-1 when betting opened the previous day (and sent off 15-8 favourite), this was an impressive start to her career.”
It has been a great few days for Scorpion with the unbeaten Jack The Wire (5g Scorpion-Smiling Away, by Phardante) scoring at Tipperary on Thursday, a week after Trevor Hemmings’ Dante’s Way (6g Scorpion-Benedicta Rose, by Beneficial) won on his racecourse debut at Kelso.
