The first crop 5-year-olds by Vinnie Roe, who stands under the Coolmore N.H. Sires banner at Grange Stud, are beginning to really make their mark. This was highlighted last Saturday when the Charles Byrnes trained Our Vinnie and Michael Hourigan’s The Crafty Butcher finished 1-2 in a competitive bumper at Naas, the pair pulling 6 lengths clear of their 16 rivals. Also on Saturday David Pipe’s Waterunder (a 15-length pt-to-pt winner for William Codd) won a novices’ hurdle at Wincanton.
Vinnie Roe’s other recent winners include the Margaret Mullins trained Mumbo Jumbo who looks to have a very bright future having scored at Leopardstown on 29th December under a penalty when defeating four previous winners and Emma Lavelle’s highly regarded Claret Cloak which won by 6 lengths first time out at Wincanton and was a good second in a Listed bumper at Ascot on 16th December on his second start.
Vinnie Roe was a remarkably classy and tough racehorse, winning 13 of his 29 starts and earning over €1,800,000. The only horse to win the Irish St. Leger-Gr.1 four times Vinnie Roe also won the Prix Royal-Oak-Gr.1 and was runner-up in both the Melbourne Cup-Gr.1 and Ascot Gold Cup-Gr.1.
