A pair of exciting long-term prospects completed a double on either side of the Irish Sea for Vinnie Roe on Saturday.
At Naas, the Charles Byrnes-trained Our Vinnie (5g Vinnie Roe-Boopsey, by Old Vic) justified odds-on favouritism to win the 18-runner bumper.
“He deserved it and Robbie (McNamara) gave him a great ride,” Byrnes told www.irishracing.com. “He won’t do a whole lot more this year and may have one more run over a similar trip. He kept telling us he wanted more than two miles. He’s a nice horse and will go hurdling next season.”
Our Vinnie was bred by Pat McCreevey and was sold for 27,000 euros at the 2010 Goffs Land Rover Sale.
Meanwhile, the David Pipe-trained Waterunder (5g Vinnie Roe-Be My Katie, by Be My Native) saw off 17 rivals to win a competitive novices’ hurdle at Wincanton in the colours of Sarah Clifford, whose husband Wayne sponsored the contest.
“It’s a bit special for this horse to win, as he’s really a three-mile chaser in the making rather than a two-mile hurdler,” Wayne Clifford told www.racingpost.com
Waterunder, who was bred by Charles Clarke, was bought by Clifford for £31,000 at Cheltenham in December on the back of and Irish point-to-point success.
