In-form Scorpion sired the winner of Sandown’s ultra-competitive EBF British Stallion Studs & TBA Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race on Saturday when The Nipper (5m Scorpion-Sharp Single, by Supreme Leader) came out on top.
The Warren Greatrex-trained five-year-old, bred by W L Smith and partners, stretched her unbeaten record to three runs as she saw off a dozen classy rivals to take the prize.
The Racing Post commented: “THE NIPPER took her unbeaten record to three with an outstanding effort considering she hung right across to the stands´ side from the top of the home straight. She conceded plenty of ground in doing so, and evidently has a proper engine as she´d have won comfortably if keeping a straight line. In the right hands, it´ll be fascinating to see what she can do over jumps next season as she has a mix of speed and stamina in her pedigree. A trip to Punchestown could figure before she signs off for the campaign.”
Greatrex added: “She is very, very good. As we have got La Bague Au Roi everyone seems to have forgotten this one, there is not a lot between them. She is just powerful and relentless, I know Gavin (Sheehan) was niggling her turning in, but I didn’t worry as he knows how to ride her. He knows her inside out..
“She is a relentless galloper, with an extremely bright future. In the paddock she stood out – she has got the X-factor and she knows she is good. We were thinking of Punchestown, but that is right-handed, so we will speak to the owner. She will go hurdling next year as she jumps extremely well.”
