$1.1 Million Uncle Mo Colt Tops Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Session

Uncle Mo’s 2-year-old colt out of Miss Ocean City sold for $1.1 million to Donato Lanni for Michael Lund Petersen to top the opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale on Monday.

The colt is a half-brother to Grade II winner Azar and out of a half-sister to Grade III winner Woodlander and the dam of multiple graded stakes winner Coal Front. Bred by the William M. Backer Revocable Trust, the Pike Racing-consigned colt breezed a bullet :10.0 during last week’s breeze show.

"I'm happy for Michael because this is his sale,” Lanni told Blood-Horse. “It's only a 10-minute drive for him to come here. I saw there was a bunch of outs and told him, 'You better hurry up.’ He looks very similar to a horse we have now called Uncle Chuck. He's a similar-looking Uncle Mo and he's a horse that we will take our time with. Bob (Baffert) will take his time.”

“He's a good horse, everybody saw that, and that's what they cost. I'm never surprised for horses like that because they are so hard to find. It's very rare and you have to stretch a bit more to get them.”

Sold as Hip 118, the Virginia-bred is bred on the same Uncle Mo x Mineshaft cross as his sire’s Grade III-winning daughter Miss Mo Mentum. Overall, A.P. Indy granddaughters have produced five stakes winners and seven stakes horses with Uncle Mo, led by his Grade I winning son and studmate Mo Town.

The colt continues a strong three days for his sire with the stallion’s Galilean winning the Soi Phet Stakes on Saturday as one of six stakes winners and 15 stakes horses for Uncle Mo in 2020.
