450,000gns Colt for Justify at Tattersalls

Justify’s first yearling through the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale ring on Tuesday was purchased by Elliott/McElroy for 450,000gns.

The colt out of Hourglass was the highest priced offering by a freshman sire during the first session.

Bred by China Horse Club International, the Baroda Stud-offered colt saw an update Saturday when stakes winner Dogtag was third in the Grade I Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita. Out of a half-sister to Hourglass, Dogtag also placed second in two Grade IIs after the catalog was released.

Dogtag is just one of many stakes performers on this year’s page. His Galileo dam is a half-sister to champion and successful sire Shamardal and Group II winner Geoffrey Chaucer. Dogtag is out of the stakes-placed Diamond Necklace, who also produced stakes-placed Raskova.

His second dam, the stakes-placed Helsinki, is out of the great broodmare and Group I winner Helen Street. From Helsinki’s sire Machiavellian, she also produced multiple Grade I winner and successful sire Street Cry. Those also on the colt’s page include dual Group I winner Victor Ludorum, Grade I winner Territories, and the stakes winning, Group I Irish Oaks third Mary Tudor.

In all, Justify has five to go through the ring during Book 1 of the sale this week.

His yearlings sold this year are led by a $1,815,520 colt out of Grade I winner Zipessa and a $1,550,000 colt out of Grade III-placed stakes producer True Feelings.
