$700,000 Filly Headlines Book 1 For Munnings

Munnings was in high demand during the first book of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale this week when none of his six sold brought less than $300,000 with the group averaging $445,833.

They were led by a $700,000 filly purchased by Shadwell Racing from the Taylor Made Sales consignment. Bred by Three Chimneys Farm out of the stakes winning and Grade I-placed Tapit mare Princesa Carolina, the filly is the second out of that mare. Princesa Carolina is a daughter of the dual Grade I winner Pure Clan, who herself is one of three stakes performers out of the Grade III winning Gather The Clan.

In addition to Pure Clan, the page includes Grade I winners Finley’sluckycharm and Sky Diva and Grade I-placed Pretty Point. In all, the page has 17 stakes performers led by nine stakes winners.

The second most expensive of the book was a $525,000 colt named Reynolds out of Hit It Rich.

Purchased by Donato Lanni for SF Bloodstock, Starlight, and Madaket, the Gainesway-offered colt was bred by Helen Alexander. He is a half-brother to the Grade III-placed Profiteer and three other winners out of multiple Grade III winner and Grade II-placed Hit It Rich. Hit It Rich is a half-sister to the stakes winning Spanish Mission and the dam of two stakes performers.

Their Grade III winning dam Cuando Puede is a half-sister to the Grade I-winning Honey Ride and the stakes winning dam of Grade II winner Dominus.

The Stonehaven Steadings-bred and -offered filly out of the stakes placed Canny was the third most expensive Munnings of the book when Mike Ryan went to $450,000 for her.

The filly’s dam has already produced a winner from one foal of racing age and is a full sister to the Grade III winner Send It In. Their multiple winning dam Sharp Instinct also produced Powder River among her runners. This filly’s Grade I winning third dam Forty Paulina is also a half-sister to the multiple Grade I winning Fanatic Boy and to the dam of Uruguay Horse of the Year and Grade I winner Fletcher.

Canny had a full brother to this filly this year and visited Justify this year.

Seeing his six sold having a median of $400,000, Munnings also saw his yearlings sell for $350,000, $350,000 and $300,000 at Keeneland. Munnings yearlings have sold for up to $775,000 in 2023 with that filly selling at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale.
