American Pharoah Sees Continued Success At Karaka

The second session of Karaka in New Zealand was another big session for Triple Crown winner American Pharoah when Lot 297 sold for NZ$360,000.

The first foal out of Grade III winner Soubrettes, the colt was consigned by Curraghmore and purchased by Moody Racing. He is one of five sold at Karaka so far this week and was joined by a NZ$150,000 colt out of Listed winner and Grade I-placed Strada Cavallo during the second session from the same consignor and purchased by Pike Racing.

From the family of New Zealand Champion Star Satire, Lot 297 was given a big update over the weekend when his Fastnet Rock half-brother Toscanini finished fourth in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (C & G). His family also includes Group II winners Satin Shoes and Zarzuela and Group I-placed Petushki among the 10 stakes horses on his catalog page.

American Pharoah’s first Southern Hemisphere yearlings have impressed this Australian sales season, averaging $338,095 at last month’s Magic Millions Yearling Sale with 21 yearlings selling for $7.1 million.

After two sessions at Karaka, American Pharoah has the second highest average of all stallions with five sold for an average of NZ$277,000. He also has the sixth most expensive yearling sold after two days with Lot 189 bringing NZ$575,000 on Monday.

The first Triple Crown winner in 37 years, American Pharoah has gotten off to a flying start in his stallion career as the Champion Freshman Sire in the U.S. led by four stakes winners and 12 stakes horses.
