Classy Edition a TDN Rising Star for Classic Empire
Classic Empire’s $550,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds Sale graduate Classy Edition (2f Classic Empire x Newbie, by Bernardini) lived up to that price tag on Sunday with a TDN Rising Star debut at Saratoga.
Racing over 5 ½ furlongs on the dirt in a Maiden Special Weight, Classy Edition raced a few lengths off the leaders as the race favorite.
As three battled for the lead around the turn, Classy Edition moved to their outside to join them as they entered the stretch. As soon as they had straightened out, Classy Edition was home free with Ortiz easing up on her in the end as the filly romped to a 6 ¾ length victory.
Trained by Todd Pletcher for Robert and Lawana Low, New York-bred Classy Edition is from the famed Chester and Mary Broman breeding program.
The filly is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Newly Minted and stakes-placed New Girl In Town from the three runners out of winning Bernardini mare Newbie. Newbie is out of stakes winner Changeisgonnacome, who is the dam of five winners from five to race.
The family also includes Grade I winner Golden Post and Grade II winners Lonesome Street and Union Avenue.
Newbie also had a colt by American Pharoah last year.
Now the sire of 10 winners, Classic Empire also has the second most stakes performers with four led by stakes winner First Empire. The stallion nearly had a second winner on the day shortly after Classy Edition's win with a second place finisher at Kentucky Downs on Sunday as well.
