Classy Edition (Classic Empire) winning the Joseph A Gimma Stakes at Belmont Park

Classy Edition Romps By Eight in Joseph A Gimma

Classy Edition (2f Classic Empire x Newbie, by Bernardini) continued her roll of success on Friday when the filly romped in the Joseph A. Gimma Stakes by eight lengths.

The seven furlong dirt race saw Classy Edition in last for a furlong before Irad Ortiz Jr. put her in the heat of the race. Racing just a few lengths off a dueling duo that included Practical Joke’s Shesawildjoker, Classy Edition joined them as they crossed into the final quarter.

Ortiz gave her a few taps as they turned into the stretch and she was quickly away.

The final furlong was all about racing away from the field and she did just that by finishing eight lengths in front of the second place finisher with Shesawildjoker third.

Classy Edition was purchased by Rob and Lawana Low for $550,000 from breeders Chester and Mary Broman through the Sequel Bloodstock consignment at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale earlier this year.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Classy Edition has won her two starts by a combined 14 ¾ lengths.

Classy Edition is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Newly Minted and multiple stakes placed New Girl in Town from her dam Newbie’s other three runners.

A two-time winner, Newbie is out of the stakes winning Changeisgonnacome. That mare is one of two stakes winners for her own dam with multiple half-sisters producing stakes performers.

Newbie foaled an American Pharoah colt last year.

Tied for the third most stakes winners of any North American freshman sire with two, Classic Empire is also tied for the second most stakes performers with only Caravaggio having more.
